Is 2XKO Shutting Down?

Active development is ending. Riot says the game, online servers, downloads, and offline play will continue beyond 2026. Those are different facts.

Direct answer

No—not in the ordinary sense of an immediate game or server shutdown. Riot announced on August 20, 2026 that 2XKO’s active development will conclude at the end of 2026. It also said servers will remain online, the game will remain downloadable on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and offline play is unaffected. Riot promised advance notice if that plan changes.

A plan is not a permanent guarantee This page reports Riot’s August 20 announcement. “Servers will remain on beyond 2026” does not establish an unlimited lifetime. Riot said it would provide advance notice if online or offline availability changes.

Purchases

Refunds and one final bundle

Riot disabled KO Point purchases and said it would refund eligible purchases made on or before August 20. A fixed-price bundle replaces the rotating monetization model.

Why is active development ending?

Riot says it evaluated retention, new-player activity, engagement, revenue, and operating cost through 2026. According to the company, updates produced short-term positive reactions but not a sustained change large enough to support the intended live-service model. Riot’s account says the game cost substantially more to operate than it generated and that reduced staffing or a slower patch cadence did not create a viable path.

That is the company’s explanation, not an independently audited financial statement. Riot did not publish the underlying player, retention, revenue, or cost data in the announcement, so this page does not convert phrases such as “a fraction” into invented numbers.

Why “shutting down” is an imprecise label

A live game can change along several independent axes: new content, balance work, bug fixes, monetization, ranked competition, official esports, online matchmaking, downloads, and local offline play. Riot is ending or reducing several of those layers while retaining others. Headlines that describe the entire bundle as either “nothing changes” or “the game disappears” miss the actual status.

From Project L to 2XKO

Riot publicly introduced the fighting-game effort as Project L during its October 2019 anniversary announcements and renamed it 2XKO in February 2024. The project grew from Riot’s acquisition of Radiant Entertainment, the studio behind Rising Thunder. It later entered PC early access and reached consoles before Riot first reduced the team in February 2026 and then announced the end of active development in August.

What should players watch next?

The announcement identifies several future facts that should be checked rather than assumed: whether scheduled patches ship on the announced dates, whether refunds complete across platforms and regions, whether the December bug-fix pass is needed, whether download availability remains unchanged, and whether Riot later announces any server transition. Riot Updates will date any update to this page.
