How the format evolved

Four eras explain the list better than nineteen isolated themes

A set is more than a skin theme. Each one combines a roster reset, a launch patch, and a system intended to change how players make decisions.

Sets 1–3 · 2019–2020

Experiment becomes a product model

Set 1 proved the game could last. Rise of the Elements replaced the launch roster, and Galaxies paired the set model with mobile and the first formal world championship.

Sets 4–6 · 2020–2022

Temporary systems start leaving permanent lessons

Chosen, Shadow and Radiant Items, and Hextech Augments tested different kinds of commitment. Augments proved durable enough to remain part of TFT after Set 6 ended.

Sets 7–9 · 2022–2023

The final mid-set cycle

Dragons, Hero Augments, and Region Portals arrived while Riot reconsidered six-month sets. Horizonbound became the last scheduled mid-set before a three-full-set annual cadence.

Sets 10–18 · 2023–2026

Faster renewal and technical separation

Full sets moved to a roughly four-month rhythm. The sequence culminated in Enchanted Wilds, the live Set 18 and Riot's announced migration from shared Hextech technology to Unreal.

Common questions about TFT set numbering

How many TFT sets have launched?

Eighteen numbered sets have launched through Enchanted Wilds on August 26, 2026. Set 19 is announced but had not launched or received a public name at this review.

Was the first set officially named?

The original roster is generally identified as Set 1, Launch Set, or Beta Set. It did not have a polished branded title comparable with Rise of the Elements or Galaxies.

When did TFT stop using mid-sets?

Horizonbound, the second half of Runeterra Reforged, was the final scheduled mid-set. Starting with Remix Rumble, Riot shifted to three complete sets per year.

Does every new set replace everything?

No. Sets replace most champions, traits, and the featured mechanic, while transferable systems and skills—economy, positioning, scouting, items, and now Augments—provide continuity.
