What did Riot reset in 2024?
On March 20, 2024, Riot co-founder Marc Merrill said the team had decided to reset the project’s direction. His explanation was that Riot did not want to make a conventional MMO distinguished only by a “Runeterra coat of paint.” The team would work quietly for several years before sharing more.
That statement supports a creative and product-direction reset. It does not say the MMO was canceled, and it does not document a total restart from zero. Riot did not publish an inventory of retained or discarded code, art, tools, systems, or design work. “Reset” is therefore the precise term; “everything was scrapped” goes beyond the evidence.
“Going dark” is not a release schedule
Merrill’s warning about years of silence set an expectation for communication, not a countdown to beta or launch. A long period without screenshots, trailers, testing dates, or a product name is consistent with the stated plan. It cannot be converted into a specific year by counting forward from 2024.
