20 controlled lore questions · official policy separated from inference

Is Arcane Canon?

Yes—but “Arcane is canon” is the start of the answer, not permission to erase every older League story or turn a visual suggestion into a confirmed rewrite.

Is Arcane part of League of Legends canon?

Riot's October 12, 2023 policy places new Runeterra storytelling in one shared canon. Riot also said reconciliation would happen gradually as affected stories and champions are revisited. That makes Arcane central to current Piltover and Zaun storytelling without proving that every older biography was deleted on the announcement date.

Gradualstated reconciliation method
Canon is not a blanket-retcon switch The most accurate unit of analysis is the individual claim: a character origin can be fully integrated, substantially transformed, partly reconciled, or still unresolved. The register keeps those states separate.

What Riot actually established

One policy, three important limits

The policy connects future storytelling. It does not make every fan reconciliation official, and it does not remove the need to distinguish a public Riot statement from an interpretation of a scene.

Official policy

New Runeterra stories share one canon

Riot moved away from treating each new medium as an automatically separate canonical universe. Arcane therefore participates in the same developing story world as newer game and narrative work.

Official process

Reconciliation happens over time

Riot acknowledged inconsistencies and described correcting them as relevant parts of the universe are revisited. Older pages can remain inconsistent during that transition.

Sources: ARC-S013
Evidence control

Silence is not deletion or confirmation

A character missing from Arcane is not automatically removed from canon. Likewise, a suggestive image can support an implication without supplying every missing event in a revised biography.

Evidence hierarchy

Policy, on-screen evidence, and inference are not interchangeable

1 · Official policy or release

A Riot statement can establish the shared-canon rule or a game integration such as Ambessa's champion release. It still may not answer every downstream chronology question.

2 · Direct screen evidence

Arcane can establish what happens in its story—such as Vander becoming Warwick—while older biographies may still require later editorial reconciliation.

3 · Supported implication

The Orianna imagery supports a connection to Singed's daughter. Recording that implication is different from claiming Riot published a complete replacement biography.

4 · Unconfirmed speculation

Noxian imagery and a separate cinematic can create plausible expectations, but they do not announce a named successor series. Future-project claims remain unknown until an authorized source confirms them.

Claim-by-claim reconciliation

Practical reading guide

Three shortcuts that create bad lore answers

“Arcane made every older League story non-canon.”

Too broad. Riot announced a shared direction for new stories and gradual reconciliation. The correct status depends on the character, event, and specific older claim.

Sources: ARC-S013
“If Arcane did not show it, Riot deleted it.”

Absence is not deletion. Camille and Clan Ferros, for example, remain unresolved in this evidence set; two seasons not centering them does not settle their future place in Piltover and Zaun history.

“Season Two confirmed the next series and its region.”

No named successor series was confirmed at this review. Noxus is a reasonable subject of analysis, but a setting clue, creator discussion, or cinematic is not a release announcement.

Follow the evidence from policy to character.

Compare each adaptation, read Arcane's complete production and release history, or see how League's own lore evolved before the shared-canon policy.
