28. Modes beyond standard TFT
TFT’s mode history shows experimentation, promotion, retirement and reuse.
Hyper Roll
Hyper Roll launched in 2021 as the first Lab. It removed normal interest management, accelerated leveling and used fixed damage to produce shorter games. Riot later promoted it to a game mode, suggesting an expectation of long-term support. TFT-S023TFT-S027
In 2025, Riot reversed that direction. It announced the mode would spin down and ended it as a permanent queue when K.O. Coliseum launched. TFT-S049TFT-S050TFT-S051
This is not the same as saying Hyper Roll never mattered. It lasted for years and demonstrated demand for faster TFT. Its retirement shows the opportunity cost of maintaining a permanent queue through every set.
Double Up
Double Up launched in 2021 with shared team health, gift armories and reinforcements. Unlike Hyper Roll, it graduated from experimental status and remained a durable mode. TFT-S025TFT-S029TFT-S047
Its history demonstrates that TFT can support cooperative strategy without merely allowing friends to queue into the same free-for-all.
PvE modes
Tocker’s Trials launched as a highly experimental Workshop mode in 2024. Ao Shin’s Ascent later added a progression track, Guides, difficulty zones and a longer-form PvE structure. TFT-S043TFT-S054
These modes reinterpret TFT’s shop, items and combat against designed encounters. They also provide lower-pressure onboarding and allow spectacular combinations that would be inappropriate in ranked play.
Rotating high-loot modes
Choncc’s Treasure and related variants exaggerate resource access and three-star possibilities. Their recurring use shows that TFT’s mode portfolio increasingly favors limited events over many permanently active queues.
29. Set Revivals: turning retired history into live content
Set Revivals began with Galaxies: Return to the Stars in January 2024. Riot did not simply restore an old executable. It adapted retired rosters to modern systems, added a Revival ladder and changed balance or quality-of-life rules. TFT-S066
Later Revivals included Dawn of Heroes, Festival of Beasts, Remix Rumble and Uncharted Realms. Festival of Beasts returned more than once. TFT-S044TFT-S067TFT-S068
This transformed the meaning of a “dead” set. A retired set became a reusable library rather than inaccessible history.
Revivals serve several functions:
- nostalgia for existing players;
- discovery for people who missed the original;
- content between current-set milestones;
- testing of how old mechanics behave with modern systems;
- preservation of art and design work;
- SEO and community discussion that reactivate old guides and memories.
They also complicate historical documentation. “Fates returned in 2025” does not mean the original 2020 rules returned unchanged. A serious database needs separate records for original set, mid-set and each Revival version.
The 7 Year Bash extended the idea further by combining traits from every prior set rather than reviving one roster. TFT-S058
